Three of Tennessee's Most Wanted are now featured in a deck of playing cards, similar to those given to soldiers during the war in Iraq. The Deck of Cards was distributed by the TV show, America's Most Wanted.

Our subscription to the The Rathkamp Matchcover Society came in the mail, accompanied by a big package - including the 508th edition of the RMS Bulletin (bi-monthly, 32 pages - accepts advertising) and a huge directory with members' collecting topics. Included with the first-time membership is invaluable collecting information including Selected Glossary of Collecting Terms and the very informative Match Tips by Bill Thomas - RMS member #2737. They even included samples of matchcovers in our favorite collecting topic - motels!

RMS is a national organization, and the Bulletin covers news from other matchcover groups at the State and local level. Packed with in-depth articles on matchcover topics, letters to the editor and regular features such as "Hobby History", "Around the World" and "Great Finds". The latest issue has an article about the most expensive matchcover/ matchbox ($5,600.99) and the oldest known cover printed with a date (September 28th & 29th 1898). A short and sweet article by George and Mary Green about oversize matchcovers, usually any matchcover over 30 or 40 matches, up to 240 strike. Oversize matches were made for a variety of businesses - industrial products (International Harvester), motel, restaurants, tourist attractions and other topics. Specific manufacturers are listed in the article who produced oversized matches in the years before WWII including the Lion Match Co., Universal and Diamond. Matches by these major match companies, and many smaller companies are valuable collectors items today. The article talks abut storing collectible matchcovers (goto http://www.dotpattern.com/supplies ), and the 1892 invention of paper matches by Joshua Pusey.

"Close Cover Before Striking" is the most printed phrase in the history of the world. Matchbook collecting is second only to collecting stamps as a popular hobby.

The joker from a new deck of playing cards printed onto clear plastic. The pips are printed onto one side, and a simple target pattern is printed onto the back. The court cards are and jokers are very simplified on this deck called Invisible Cards.

Interesting web site for joker collectors:

It may be disappointing to learn the joker card is a recent invention, introduced about 500 years after the first playing cards made their appearance in Europe. But, the medieval jester is a perfect companion to the royal court of kings, queens and knights pictured on playing cards.

Illustrations of the medieval jester can be found on a German language web site called Die mittelalterliche Narrenidee (The Medieval Fool Idea) - presenting 24 images of jesters found in books and manuscripts from the 16th century.

The Metropolitan Post Card Club - Fall Show at the New Yorker Hotel 8th Avenue and 34th Street.

This years show filled three rooms with a million postcards from more than 50 dealers. Postcards from Alfons Mucha are fetching $300 in very good condition. The Mucha postcards we bought in a little store in Prague last year would have sold for double our cost! Purchased 2 tacky motel postcards ($1 each) and 2 Beetles postcards (talked him down to $1.50 each). Check for these postcards soon in the postcard collection at dotpattern.

Membership Information: Oldest continuous Post Card Club, started in 1946. Over 300 active members who meet once a month (second Saturday) at the New Yorker Hotel. My exploration of all things that can be called ephemera, including printed paper in the form of postcards, matchbook covers, playing cards, menus, brochures, magazines, tickets, playbills, and more. The dictionary definition is pretty boring:

n. pl. e·phem·er·a or e·phem·er·ons

1. A short-lived thing.
2. Printed matter of passing interest.

Ephemera is anything printed, often for adertising purposes and once, perhaps, of limited or 'ephemeral' interest. Now emphemera is of great interest and often of great value. Not only valuable for the beautiful printed images, or the great memories of meeting people and collecting, but also valuable on the open market, at conventions or eBay.
